THE KOINIKUYA AMERICAN
SHOWA BREEDING PROGRAM
PROUDLY
AMERICAN
BORN
Our grand masterplan is to produce champion quality Showas in all varieties here in the USA.
Our first milestone is to consistently produce quality Regular, Gin Rin and Doitsu Showas starting late 2022.
The next step would be to breed rarer varieties for discerning collectors: Kin and Goshiki Showas.
OUR STAND ON "SEMBETSU"
(culling)
Every breeding cycle brings anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 baby koi. With Showas, 20 to 50% can be identified as the desirable "kuroko" (black fry) within 3 to 7 days of hatching. Traditionally, the rest are culled.
Breeders usually do three to five more selections are made before 10-15% are ready for market. Although a number of baby koi die from sickness, weather, accidents, birth defects and other circumstances, it is not economically feasible for most breeders to maintain more than a hundred fish at any time.
Koinikuya's selection process does not involve culling. Everything including veterinary care is given to every fish in our facility. If you would like to see some of our koi that are up for adoption, click here:
